There are shuttle buses that can be booked in advance, that will take you directly to your hotel in Playa Del Carmen, from Cancun. We booked ours through Olympus Tours for about $60 for us both.
Travel to Mexico (for a duration of 180 days or less), does not require a visa. However, you are required to obtain one for America if you are transiting through their airports.
